Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb beef (chuck or stew meat) - cut into small cubes
  • 2 large onions - sliced
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp butter - unsalted
  • 1 tsp salt - adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper - adjust to taste
  • 2 bay leaves - optional
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon - optional
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander - optional
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom - optional
  • 1/4 tsp seven spice - optional
  • 1 cup water

Method
 

  1. Heat oil and butter in a heavy pot over medium-high heat.

  3. Season with salt, black pepper, bay leaves, cinnamon, coriander, cardamom, and seven spices, then stir well to combine.

  4. Cover, and let the beef simmer on low heat.

  5. Cook for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the onions form a rich sauce. Add a small amount of water if needed.

  6.  Adjust seasoning, remove bay leaves, and serve hot.
